Learning. Creating. Succeeding.

I would like to wish everyone a happy and healthy New Year. The first half of the school year has been fantastic, and we are looking forward to an even better second half. Just a reminder, the second semester begins on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

We feel very fortunate to have a community that supports our students and Linden Community Schools. It does take a village, and we would not be able to do it without you. Thank you for your ongoing support of our students and Linden Community Schools.

LEARNING

To Call off School or Not? Snow Day

Student safety is always our number one concern, and we will always err on the side of caution when making a decision to cancel school because of bad weather conditions. The rule of thumb that we use when making the decision to cancel school is when the ambient temperature and wind speed result in a wind chill temperature of -19*F. Under these conditions, exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes. Other factors that are included in the decision-making process are snow accumulation, icing, temperature, road conditions, visibility, blowing snow, and weather forecasts.

The process, when making the decision to cancel school for weather conditions, is ongoing. Linden Schools is in constant contact with other local districts, the Genesee County Road Commission, our transportation department, local police departments, and we have individuals driving roads to help determine the conditions. Again, there is no exact science to making this decision. Student safety is our main concern.

How do we communicate to you when school is canceled? In order to get the message out as quick as possible we will be using our all-call system. Other forms of communication that we will use include social media (Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter)), local media outlets (Channel 12, WNEM TV5, WXYZ Channel 7, and WHMI.

Indoor or Outdoor Recess

With cold weather right around the corner, be sure student(s) are appropriately dressed for the colder weather. Not only is this important for students who may have to wait at bus stops, but especially for those students who will be spending time outside during recess.

As you may already know, as outlined in our Student/Parent Handbook, Linden Community Schools has a procedure of sending all students outside for recess unless there is rainy weather, or the outdoor temperature or wind chill is below zero degrees. The building principal will make this decision.

We have found the most local weather application to determine temperature and wind chill is Weather Underground. This site allows us to use the most current weather station that is located right here in Linden (Chestnut Grove subdivision). It also seems to be updated much more frequently than other sites we have researched. Our building administrators monitor this before and during recess and then inform staff and students.

LCS Bond Update

Series II of the LCS Bond Program is wrapping up. Linden High School is nearing completion as we finalize system controls.

We are currently in the process of selling our $17 million Series III Bonds, which will be completed by March 5, 2025. Series III bid recommendations are upcoming and will be presented to the LCS Board of Eduction for approval. Series III projects will include renovations to Central Elementary, Hyatt Elementary, and Linden Middle School. We anticipate construction to begin in the Spring.

Construction of our Early Childhood Center has been ongoing at Hyatt Elementary. The north end of the building has been completely reformed and is taking shape. We do anticipate moving our Early Childhood Center from the Argentine building to Hyatt in August 2025.

Check out our LCS Bond Program webpage for information on our projects and ongoing updates.

School Safety and Security

We have, and will continue to prioritize the safety of our students and staff.  Our building administrators, counselors, school psychologists, social workers, and school resource officers have been trained in the Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG).  CSTAG is a violence prevention strategy that helps to identify and prevent threatening situations.

The LCS Bond Program has allowed us to add additional layers of safety and security to our buildings.  This includes secure entryways, controlled access points with badge readers, security cameras, updates to our PA system, enhanced emergency alarm systems,  and district-wide two-way communication to maintain a secure environment for our students and staff.
